What We Do

EWAKI empowers vulnerable groups including elders, widows, people with disabilities, and refugees in sustainable practices that adapt to climate change and protect the environment.

Climate-Smart Agriculture

Training vulnerable groups in sustainable farming practices that adapt to climate change and protect the environment.

  • Promoting drought-resistant crops and soil conservation.
  • Introducing modern irrigation and water management systems.
  • Supporting smallholder farmers to increase yields and food security.
  • Ensuring elders and widows maintain productive gardens for food and income.

Horticulture

We strengthen nutrition and livelihoods through fruit and vegetable production.

  • Establishing community gardens and greenhouses.
  • Training in organic farming, pest management, and post-harvest handling.
  • Linking horticultural groups to local markets for income generation.
  • Promoting dietary diversity and improved nutrition for vulnerable households.

Aquaculture

Promoting fish farming as a sustainable livelihood option near Lake Tanganyika.

  • Training in fish pond construction, stocking, and management.
  • Providing start-up kits (fingerlings, feed, and basic equipment).
  • Supporting nutrition by increasing access to affordable protein sources.
  • Creating new income streams for widows, elders, and people with disabilities.

Soap-Making

One of our most impactful livelihood initiatives for immediate income.

  • Practical training in producing both liquid and bar soap.
  • Branding and packaging guidance to make products market-ready.
  • Financial literacy and marketing skills to grow small businesses.
  • Distribution of start-up kits so trainees can immediately begin production.

Entrepreneurship & Start-Up Kits

Turning skills into sustainable businesses through training and microfinance.

  • Training covering costing, pricing, and market access.
  • Supporting widows and people with disabilities with microfinance.
  • Equipping trainees with tools, raw materials, and seed capital.
  • Success Story: Widows’ groups in Kakonko running profitable goat-rearing projects.

Health & Social Protection

Ensuring vulnerable groups live with dignity, wellness, and legal protection.

  • Organizing free health camps (serving 538 elders in 2025).
  • Providing psychosocial support to combat loneliness and trauma.
  • Offering legal aid for land disputes or inheritance challenges.
  • Broadcasting radio programs on nutrition, rights, and inclusion.

Advocacy & Governance

Championing the rights of marginalized groups at local and national levels.

  • Lobbying for inclusive policies that protect vulnerable groups.
  • Strengthening councils of elders in community decision-making.
  • Building consortiums with local NGOs to amplify advocacy.
  • Ensuring voices are represented in government and donor platforms.

Refugee Support

Critical humanitarian response in Nyarugusu, Nduta, Mishamo, and Katumba settlements.

  • Providing health, livelihood, and safeguarding services.
  • Partnering with UNHCR for People with Special Needs (PSN).
  • Ensuring refugees are included in regional development efforts.
